US President Donald Trump has reacted with irony to comments from his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, following the imposition of new US sanctions on the two largest Russian oil companies, Rosneft and Lukoil.

The Kremlin leader acknowledged that Washington's measures would have "certain consequences," but stressed that they would not have a significant impact on the Russian economy.

But Trump didn't leave it unanswered. Asked during a press conference about Putin's statements, he responded in a sarcastic tone, saying "I'm glad he feels that way, very well."

Then, with a slight laugh and as Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stood next to him smiling, he added: “I’ll let you know in six months. Let’s see how it goes.”

According to analysts, the new sanctions are expected to deal a strong economic blow to Moscow, writes Sky News.

According to President Vladimir Putin, new US sanctions will not harm the country's economy.

He warns that Russia's contribution to global energy supplies is significant.

"Regarding the new sanctions. First of all, there is nothing new here. Yes, they are of a serious nature for us, of course, this is understandable, and they will have certain consequences, but still they will not significantly affect our economic well-being." This, of course, is an attempt to put pressure on Russia. But no self-respecting country and no self-respecting people ever puts anything under pressure. And, of course, Russia has such a privilege to feel and consider itself on this list of self-respecting countries and peoples," Putin said.

Putin also gave a harsh response to plans to send long-range missiles to Ukraine. According to the Kremlin chief, Moscow's response to deep-seated attacks on Russia will be very serious and overwhelming.

"This is an attempt at escalation. But if these weapons are used to attack Russia, the response will be very serious. I must even say that it will be overwhelming. Let them think about it," Putin said.

Putin said that disrupting the balance in global energy markets could lead to a price increase that would be unpleasant for countries such as the United States, especially given the domestic political calendar in the United States.
