A Turkish surgeon will face justice after performing stomach surgery on a 20-year-old British woman who died days later.
20-year-old Morgan Ribeiro, with the savings made by her parents, had managed to raise the sum of £2,500 to travel to Turkey and undergo the operation which would help her lose weight.
Turkish doctor Serkan Bagil performed the operation on January 5. As her family said, the girl chose Turkey because it was a more economical solution compared to Britain, where she had to wait a long time and also pay 10,000 pounds. The operation was performed and Ribeiro took the return flight. However, inside the plane she fell ill. Her condition was so bad that the plane had to make an emergency landing in Belgrade, where surgeons removed more than 10cm of her small intestine in an attempt to save her. Doctors told the family that his small intestine was cut during the operation. The girl suffered a heart attack, fell into a coma and died four days later of septic shock.
Bagil insisted she suffered an embolism during the flight, something Serbian doctors ruled out. The Turkish surgeon, who is said to have a career spanning more than two decades, claimed he had successfully operated on two other British patients and that they had recovered.
“She died of an in-flight embolism, not complications from surgery. I'm sad, very sad, she was so young that I wish this had never happened, it's the first time in my career," Bagil told the Mirror. Serbian doctors, on the other hand, said their colleague failed to spot a cut in her small intestine, which may have allowed food to enter her bloodstream, causing her to go into septic shock.
The girl's mother said in shock: Her small intestine was cut and I believe she didn't spot it. This is what the Serbian surgeons told us. Bagil's online biography states that he has performed more than 8,000 medical procedures.
Other online profiles say he graduated from Çukurova University School of Medicine in Turkey in 1996, where he completed his general surgery residency between 2003 and 2010. On his Instagram account, he regularly uploads videos of patients sharing their joy their for successful operation. Bagil writes that in the clinic "we perform all operations in a completely sterile and hospital environment".
Ribeiro paid £2,500 to have the operation, after years of trying to lose weight.
In a recent video she uploaded on TikTok before flying to Turkey to have the surgery, she expressed her emotions: My last post before ÚLS (weight loss surgery)… see you on the other side.
Her father, Richard Ribeiro, said he had done research online before deciding to send his daughter to Turkey. Serbian prosecutors, along with British authorities, have already launched investigations into Morgan's death. Her older sister Kayleigh, 26, had begged her not to have the operation, while her boyfriend Jamie Breëster claimed the hospital had not told her about the risks after the operation.
It is worth noting that a similar operation in Great Britain costs about 10,000 pounds and therefore many prefer Turkey which is very economical. But the British government is sounding the alarm, saying it knows of more than 25 British nationals who have died in Turkey since January 2019 in operations.
Serbian authorities said it was the third time a plane carrying a British cosmetic surgery patient had to make an emergency landing in Belgrade due to medical complications.
