US President Donald Trump made an unusual appearance at the White House on Sunday, mixing domestic policy messages with tensions in Iran. He invited reporters into the West Wing and appeared to greet a woman wearing a "DoorDash Grandma" shirt who was carrying two bags of McDonald's food.
" This doesn't seem staged, does it? " Trump told reporters, before spending about 15 minutes answering questions about the war in Iran, the weekend's failed negotiations, the situation in the Strait of Hormuz and criticism from Pope Leo XIV.
The meeting was intended to promote a Republican-passed law that limits taxes on tips, a measure that Trump and the Republican Party hope will have a positive impact in the midterm elections in November. However, the event highlighted the White House's efforts to balance its domestic political agenda with engaging in an open conflict with Iran.
The guest, Sharon Simmons, known as “DoorDash Grandma,” said the policy to eliminate the tip tax “has helped my family a lot.” Trump used the moment to highlight the effects of his economic policies.
At one point during the conversation, the president attempted to engage Simmons in a debate on the participation of transgender women in women's sports, but she declined to comment, saying she was there for the issue of tip taxes.
