The Nobel Committee sent a clear message by reiterating that its prizes "cannot be revoked, divided or transferred to others" following its donation by Maria Corina Machado to Donald Trump.
"But one truth remains, as the Norwegian Nobel Committee says, once a Nobel Prize is awarded, it cannot be revoked, divided or transferred to others. The decision is final and valid forever. A medal can change owners, but the title of a Nobel Peace Prize laureate cannot," the reaction states, among other things.
The president posed for a photo in the Oval Office, smiling broadly as he held the award in his hand and stood next to Machado, the head of Venezuela's opposition party. Machado told reporters on Capitol Hill on Thursday afternoon that she had given Trump her medal, which she won last year for her commitment to transforming Venezuela into a democracy.
However, the Norwegian Nobel Committee posted a lengthy tweet, noting that while many prizes “pass away” after the winner’s death, they cannot be given away. They reiterated the official decision: “Once a Nobel Prize is awarded, it cannot be revoked, divided or transferred to others. The decision is final and valid forever.”
Machado was unmoved by the warning, reminding reporters how a medal commissioned for President George Washington was given to the family of French officer Marquis de Lafayette, who helped Americans win the Revolution.
“I presented the President of the United States with the Nobel Peace Prize,” she said. Trump thanked Machado on Truth Social: “It was a great honor for me to meet María Corina Machado, from Venezuela, today. She is a wonderful woman who has been through so much. María gave me the Nobel Peace Prize for the work I have done. Such a wonderful gesture of mutual respect. Thank you María!”
Machado said he gave the medal to Trump, calling him "Washington's heir," because the president had made a "unique commitment to our freedom."
The Daily Mail has reached out to the White House for comment. Trump had publicly lobbied to win the Nobel Peace Prize last year. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The president did not invite the media to the meeting, so there were no immediate photos of Trump with the award.
Before the meeting at the White House, following the arrest of Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro by the US military, Machado expressed her willingness to award Trump the Nobel Prize.
