"Freedom of expression is eroding", Marco Rubio's appeal: Europe,
Marco Rubio, Secretary of State

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has addressed a message to Europe regarding freedom and freedom of expression. Rubio's message has been distributed by US Embassies throughout Europe, while the Secretary of State underlines that freedom of expression on the old continent is being eroded.

"Our alliances with our European partners are built on our shared principles, our shared values...

"One of these values and principles, we hope, is freedom and freedom of expression," the Secretary of State's message states.

Rubio was asked during a press conference on December 19: "The State Department mentioned earlier this year some concerns about free speech, particularly in Europe. What are some of your goals regarding that in 2026?"

"Well, I mean, in general, we're concerned about any country, first and foremost, where American freedom of speech might be implicated, okay," he said.

"Are we going to live in a world where some American posts on social media and then goes to an airport somewhere and gets arrested?" Rubio asked, adding "we're also concerned about the impact that some of their policies are having on our social media platforms, as you've seen recently. X is facing this massive multimillion-dollar fine that they're going to have to pay, I think, if they want to continue operating."

This is not the first time that senior Trump administration officials have expressed criticism of Europe, particularly regarding freedom of expression. Similar criticism of Europe has also been directed at Vice President JD Vance.
