Triggered by the frightening statements of former President Donald Trump, the US Congress yesterday proposed a law drawn up by representatives of both parties in the Senate, precisely by the Democrat Tim Kaine and the Republican Mark Rubio, according to which the president is prohibited from withdrawing the country from NATO military alliance.
The bill is expected to be signed by US President Joe Biden. The unexpected law seems to be created to "tie the hands" of Donald Trump in case of a possible victory of the White House in the next elections.
Former President Trump has often spoken about the possibility of the country's withdrawal from the alliance, according to him, "from the higher costs that the US pays" compared to other countries.
It was they, senators Rubio and Kaine, who failed to pass the law during the time when Trump was in power, as they now seem to have secured approval as part of the Pentagon's annual budget.
The law provides that if a president tries to withdraw from the NATO military alliance without the approval of the Senate or by an act of Congress, all funding for the action is stopped and the White House is authorized to be sued for the action.
Last month, Rolling Stone magazine wrote that Trump, who expects to secure the Republican presidential nomination for 2024, has continued to campaign on the idea of withdrawing the US from NATO. Trump has complained about Article 5 of the NATO document on "collective defense", which brings the US into conflict if one of its member countries is attacked.
