In an important development parallel to the Shanghai summit being held in Tianjin, China, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping held a long and substantive conversation, where among the main topics was the recent meeting between Putin and US President Donald Trump in Alaska.
The news was confirmed by Yury Ushakov, a close adviser to the Russian president, who told the state-run TASS agency: "The president had a very long conversation, mainly, of course, with the Chinese leader. They sat down together for an active and very fruitful conversation. Among other things, the president told me, they discussed recent contacts with the Americans."
This confirms that in the shadow of the SCO summit, while the US is outside this forum, the global discourse between the three superpowers, the US, Russia and China, is developing in parallel, with particular emphasis on informal diplomacy.
The rumored meeting in Alaska between Trump and Putin remains unclear in content, but the very fact that it was widely discussed between Putin and Xi Jinping underscores the significant weight of this contact in geopolitical developments.
These talks come at a time when the West faces internal challenges and the US is in conflict with both of these powers, Russia over the war in Ukraine and China for economic and military dominance in the Indo-Pacific.
