The US is considering halting arms supplies to Israel as a means of pressuring Benjamin Netanyahu to scale back its offensive in Gaza.
Three US officials and a former official told NBC News that the Pentagon has reviewed Israeli arms requests to the White House. But a decision has not yet been taken on whether any changes will be made to shipments.
The sources said Israeli officials continue to ask Washington for more weapons, including large aerial bombs, munitions and air defenses.
But after weeks of private requests that garnered the results sought by the White House, the US is now considering slowing or halting shipments in the hope that Israel will take action such as opening humanitarian corridors for more aid to Gaza.
Officials said the U.S. has discussed using 155 mm artillery rounds and joint direct attack munitions as leverage, but they added that the Biden administration was unlikely to slow the deployment of air defenses.
Another step contemplated by the administration is offering Israel more of the weapons it has requested as an incentive to comply with US demands, the officials said.
