One of the most discussed measures to deal with the energy crisis in Europe has returned to the center of debate in Germany: the imposition of a general speed limit on highways.
In an interview with ' SPIGEL' , the director of the International Energy Agency (IEA), Fatih Birol, emphasizes that this measure could have a direct impact on reducing fuel consumption at a time when global markets remain unstable.
"Germany should think about a speed limit on motorways, " Birol declares, describing the issue as sensitive but necessary in the current context.
According to IEA analysis, even a small reduction in speed can bring significant savings.
"A speed reduction of 10 kilometers per hour on highways could reduce national oil consumption by up to six percent, " he points out.
The data mentioned in the interview also shows the concrete savings potential at the national level. According to the Federal Environment Agency in Germany, “with a speed limit of 120 km/h on motorways and 80 km/h on regional roads, around 3.2 billion liters of gasoline and diesel could be saved per year.”
The debate over speed limits in Germany has traditionally been polarised, but the current energy crisis is reshaping the discussion. Rising fuel prices and the risk of shortages, particularly for products like diesel, are increasing pressure on policymakers to consider immediate measures.
Birol places this proposal within a broader package of short-term measures to deal with the crisis, including financial support for low-income families and fiscal interventions. However, he suggests that behavioral changes, such as reducing speed, can produce quick and tangible results.
At the same time, he links this measure to a broader strategy to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and increase energy efficiency in transport.
The interview published by SPIEGEL presents the speed limit not only as a road safety or political issue, but as a concrete instrument for managing the energy crisis in Europe.
