It was October 27, 1962. The period when humanity came closer than ever to nuclear holocaust.
The Cuban Missile Crisis was a 13-day confrontation that occurred in October 1962 between the United States and the Soviet Union over Soviet ballistic missiles stationed in Cuba.
Today, through the eyes of Americans from Venezuela, could there be a similar crisis?
A few days ago, in statements to CBS, US President Donald Trump sent a message that "Maduro's days are numbered". A large US military force is in the region, and for its part, Venezuela has requested military assistance from Russia, China and Iran.
Will Moscow send Oreshnik to Caracas?
In a statement to Russian state media that has raised alarm in Western strategic circles, Russian deputy Alexei Zhuravlev, deputy chairman of the State Duma Defense Committee, confirmed that Moscow is already supplying weapons to Venezuela and that he “sees no obstacles” to the transfer of the new Oreshnik hypersonic ballistic missile or Kalibr cruise missiles to Caracas. The statements come against a backdrop of rising geopolitical tension in the Caribbean, where the United States has increased its military presence.
Zhuravlev said that Russia supplies Venezuela with “almost the entire range of weapons, from rifles to aircraft,” and that the details of the deliveries are classified, which could surprise the United States. This statement may refer to the fact that in recent weeks, Russian Il-76 transport planes (two flights were recorded by the Flightradar24 system) have flown to Venezuela, possibly delivering spare parts for air defense systems that Russia has sold to Venezuela over the past two decades, strengthening the South American country’s defense capabilities against possible air invasions by the US Air Force or naval invasions by the US Navy.
What is the Oreshnik rocket?
The Oreshnik missile, a medium-range hypersonic ballistic missile system derived from the RS-26 line, has an estimated range of up to 5,000 kilometers and speeds approaching Mach 10.
Its possible deployment in Venezuela would constitute an unprecedented deterrent capability in the region, capable of threatening targets in the Caribbean Sea, such as Puerto Rico or the Virgin Islands, and even the continental United States.
Meanwhile, the Kalibr missiles, widely used by Russia in the war in Ukraine, have export variants operated by the armed forces of Algeria, India and Vietnam, with a range of up to 300 kilometers, although Russian variants can reach between 1,500 and 2,500 kilometers.
