You scratch my back, I'll scratch yours. This was the atmosphere when Donald Trump met Viktor Orban at the White House.
The Hungarian prime minister needs an exemption from US sanctions on Russian oil. The US president needs Orban's influence over Vladimir Putin to help end the war in Ukraine.
And on this issue, there were positive tones from both leaders. Asked if he believed he would meet with Putin soon, Trump replied: "There's always a chance."
He added that Budapest would still be his favorite place. Orban said he was "strongly convinced" that the war would end soon.
He accused "Brussels and the Europeans" of wanting the conflict to continue "even though many of them believe that Ukraine can win."
Asked by Trump to clarify whether he thought Ukraine could win the war, Orban replied: "You know, a miracle could happen."
Trump's courtesy to his guest was evident, giving him more space than usual to speak. They are, of course, creative ideological comrades, both isolationist and conservative, and projecting the image of strongmen.
This alignment with Trump really matters to Orban, who is facing a strong challenge from former party colleague Peter Magyar in the upcoming Hungarian elections./ SkyNews
