China's top diplomat today used harsh rhetoric against the United States and spoke about his country's close ties with Russia during a press conference in Beijing.
As Voice of America correspondent Bill Gallo reports from Beijing, China's harsh language against the United States comes in the wake of an important meeting of the Chinese parliament that took place on Monday.
China's foreign minister stepped up his country's verbal attacks on the United States during a press conference in Beijing on Thursday.
"Where is the credibility in a major power if the United States always says something else and acts differently? Where is the credibility in a major power that is worried and tensed just by the mention of China?" said Mr. Wang Yi.
This statement contradicts China's stance in September, when US President Joe Biden met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in California. This meeting helped stabilize US-China relations.
On Thursday, Minister Wang Yi accused Washington of reneging on promises and said the United States is trying to contain China through sanctions.
"The desire to blame China for everything has reached an incredible level," he said.
Despite the resumption of high-level talks, the United States has expanded sanctions against China over a range of issues, from human rights abuses to its relationship with Russia.
During the conference, Minister Wang defended Beijing's support for Moscow, despite Russian aggression against Ukraine.
He also kept up pressure on Taiwan, ahead of the inauguration of a president Beijing sees as separatist.
Amid increasingly tense territorial disputes with the Philippines in the South China Sea, Mr. Wang vowed that Beijing would respond to what he called provocations and interference by outside forces.
The comments come days after an annual meeting of the Chinese parliament, which took place under strict measures in Beijing.
The meeting was aimed at showing a positive turn regarding the many problems facing the Chinese economy.
Many experts see Mr. Wang's comments as a way to set the tone for Chinese foreign policy this year.
If so, China seems to have enough problems that it can use to maneuver./VOA
