What is the Trump Doctrine based on?

Donald Trump's critics have often accused him of bigotry and isolationism.

But even before he was sworn in, Mr. Trump has shown how much he misses those words. He has helped secure a ceasefire in Gaza and shocked European politicians with a taboo-busting bid for control of Greenland.

It is now clear that the impact of Mr. Trump’s second term on the rest of the world will be even more devastating and consequential than the first. Mr. Trump is replacing a vision of America’s role in the world that has been influential since World War II. Welcome, instead, to the Trump Doctrine.

The idea of America as the indispensable defender of democracy, established borders, and universal values has disappeared.

Trump has few alliances, multilateral rules or any other elements of what is often called the "post-war world order."

Instead, the Trump Doctrine is based on the belief that American force, used in unorthodox and opportunistic ways, is the key to peace and prosperity.

This approach, at once annoying and unpredictable, transactional and norm-breaking, will be tested in three conflicts: the Middle East, Ukraine, and America's cold war with China.

In some places, like the Middle East, it may be surprisingly successful. But there are serious risks and troubling inconsistencies, particularly over what the Trump Doctrine means for Taiwan.

When the use of power is disconnected from values, the result can be chaos on a global scale. / Adapted from The Economist Pamphlet /
