The US has stated that Ukrainian forces have made "significant progress" in their efforts against Russian fortified positions in the south of the country.
White House security spokesman John Kirby said those targets were hit in the past 72 hours south of Zaporizhzhia. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba told CNN that Kiev's forces were making progress, but "the situation is tough."
Russia claims to have gained a strategic advantage near the city of Kupiansk in north-eastern Ukraine. Kirby said that Kiev itself had acknowledged that the offensive in the south, aimed at severing Russia's land corridor to Crimea, was proceeding more slowly than expected.
" They've had some success against that second line of Russian defense ," he said. Earlier in the week, Ukraine's military said it had captured the village of Robotyne in the Zaporizhzhia region.
