When referring to the strength of an earthquake, we use magnitude as a measure. Last night's shock in Morocco was 6.8, followed by an aftershock of 4.9.
The number refers to the amount of seismic energy released and gives us an idea of the damage to expect.
This earthquake is considered strong, with the potential to cause significant damage to residential areas.
If it had fallen in the 7.0 to 7.9 range, this is a major earthquake that could cause serious damage regardless of where it strikes.
Damage by hit rate
2.9 or less - usually not felt, there are millions of them a year.
3.0 to 3.9 - can be felt, but is considered minor.
4.0 - 4.9 - likely to be felt, but damage is limited.
5.0 - 5.9 - possible slight damage to buildings and structures.
6.0 - 6.9 – there is a lot of potential for extensive damage in populated areas
7.0 - 7.9 - a large earthquake with the potential for very serious damage.
8.0+ - devastating earthquake. It can destroy everything in the hit zone.
