Just hours after news of the killing of senior Hamas figures in Beirut last Tuesday, a twin bomb attack rocked the Iranian city of Kerman, killing at least 84 people and injuring more than 280.
Two bombs exploded yesterday, a few minutes apart, near the grave of Qasem Soleimani, who was killed by a US strike in 2020 in Iraq. Yesterday's two bombings occurred, not coincidentally, on the fourth anniversary of Soleimani's death, the attackers apparently keen to inflict as many casualties as possible, knowing that crowds would gather in the area for the anniversary.
But who is behind this attack?
Iran's leadership, for its part, was quick to blame Israel and the US. Iranian President Ebrahim Raishi declared that the Zionist regime will pay a heavy price for this and other crimes it has committed. Mohammad Jamsidi, a senior adviser to the Iranian president, blamed not only Israel but also the US for the deadliest terrorist attack to rock Iran since 1978.
The Americans, however, for their part, were quick to emphatically deny any involvement, stressing that neither they nor Israel had anything to do with the attacks in question.
" The January 3rd attack is inconsistent with previous Israeli operations in Iran, which have generally pursued specific military or strategic objectives. It seems more likely to be the work of terrorist groups operating in Iran, such as Islamic militants linked to ISIS who have carried out such attacks in the past ," said Gregory Brew, an Iran analyst at Eurasia Group.
Brew recalls that the Iranians have previously "blamed" terrorist attacks on Sunni terrorist organizations such as ISIS-K or the Islamic State of Khorasan. /Gzero
