Moscow has confirmed it has been in contact with the US about a possible prisoner swap as Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich remains in custody.
Yesterday, the US ambassador to Russia was allowed to visit Mr Gershkovich, while Kremlin officials were able to speak with Russian national Vladimir Dunaev, who is currently being held at a facility in Ohio.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said discussions on any possible exchange would not be made public. Russia has previously swapped high-profile prisoners with the US, most recently WNBA star Brittney Griner, who was exchanged for arms trafficker Viktor Bout.
Moscow initially said it would not accept an exchange of troops. Meanwhile, Washington has vowed to bring home Gershkovich and ex-Marine Paul Whelan, who they believe were wrongly arrested.
