The killing of the 17-year-old French Nahel by the police has been accompanied by violent protests. After 6 intense days, it seems that the situation has calmed down somewhat. The mayor of Neuilly-sur-Marne narrated the experiences of these days.
Mayor Zartoshte Bakhtiari says he hasn't slept more than three hours a night since the unrest began in France a week ago.
At night, he patrolled the streets of Neuilly-sur-Marne along with his staff and municipal councilors until 04:00 or 05:00, alerting the police to possible disturbances around the area.
"Within days, we were in hell," says the mayor.
On Tuesday, he will go to the Elysée Palace along with 200 other mayors to discuss the crisis with French President Emmanuel Macron.
"What is happening now is the result of years of weakness from politicians and decisions not being made. It is a problem of authority because these rebels are not afraid of justice. They can go to court, but they go home hours after the trial "simply because we don't have enough places in prison in this district of Paris. We can't support this kind of weakness from the state," said the mayor.
Outside his office in the town hall is still the charred wall of the town's local police station.
"They jumped over this wall at 1 a.m. with a can of gasoline," explains Mayor Bakhtiari, pointing to the ash-covered skeletons of cars lined up in front of the police station.
Last week, France was "overrun" by protests that brought destruction to the cities while the number of those arrested on Thursday reached 2300. The grandmother of the young man Nahel M, yesterday called for the calming of the protests while his family members appealed for change of the law on the use of force and weapons by the police.
