The Japanese Prime Minister, Fumio Kishida, today honored the important contribution made by the historical figure of American diplomacy, Henry Kissinger, to peace and stability in Asia.
"Henry Kissinger made an important contribution to peace and stability in the region, including in particular the normalization of US-China diplomatic relations ," Kishida told the media.
China's ambassador to the US, Xie Fang, said that the death of former US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger is a great loss for our two countries and the world.
"I am deeply shocked and saddened by the news of Kissinger's death at the age of 100. This is a great loss for our two countries and for the world. His contribution to China-US relations will go down in history and will forever remain alive in the hearts of Chinese people as a dear old friend," Ambassador Xie wrote on X (formerly Twitter), in the first official reaction to China to the news of his death.
While former president George W Bush said that America has lost one of the most reliable and unique voices in foreign affairs.
Henry Kissinger played a key role in US rapprochement with Mao Zedong's (1949-1976) China, making top-secret trips to Beijing to organize former US President Richard Nixon's historic visit to the Chinese capital in 1972. This approach ended the isolation of the Asian giant and contributed to the rapid rise of its power on the world stage, above all at the level of the economy.
Henry Kissinger, who celebrated his 100th birthday in May, was a privileged interlocutor with many of the world's most powerful people, even though he was no longer at the helm of American foreign policy for decades. In July, when he went to Beijing and was received by China's president, Xi Jinping called him a "legendary diplomat".
