The British government will not allow the United States to use its military bases to launch attacks on energy infrastructure or civilian targets in Iran, confirming a cautious stance amid rising tensions.
Asked by Bloomberg about US President Donald Trump's threats to bomb bridges and power plants if Iran does not reopen the Strait of Hormuz, Prime Minister Keir Starmer's spokesman, Tom Wells, stressed that London's position remains unchanged since the beginning of the conflict.
According to him, the United States can use British bases, including RAF Fairford in England and Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean, only for "defensive" operations.
This stance signals the United Kingdom's attempt to avoid direct involvement in a potential military escalation, while maintaining a balance between the strategic alliance with the US and the risk of escalating the conflict in the Middle East.
The statement comes at a critical moment, when Washington has increased pressure on Tehran and warned of swift strikes on key infrastructure if there is no move to open sea energy routes.
The restriction on Britain's use of the bases could affect US operational options and reflects growing concern among Western allies about the consequences of a direct clash with Iran.
In this context, London seems to be trying to maintain a supporting, but not active, role in the offensive, while the situation in the region remains unstable and sensitive to any new developments.
