At a time when everyone was expecting the intervention of the West to negotiate an agreement that would end the protracted war between Ukraine and Russia, the situation escalates to the opposite extreme.
All of a sudden, Russia's threats of a World War are back again, this time because of a move by the US and the UK. Washington and London signaled yesterday that they may give Kiev the "green light" to use long-range missiles for attacks deep inside Russia.
This move has irritated Moscow, which has not hesitated to react and make threats that foresee an inevitable war between Russia and NATO.
In a reaction of the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, to these claims, he clearly stated that if this happens then Moscow will be at war with NATO.
"Ukraine's use of long-range Western missiles to hit Russia will mean that NATO countries are at war with Russia and Moscow will make the right decisions ," Russian President Vladimir Putin said, reports " Moscow Times".
But for the British Foreign Secretary, the permission to use long-range missiles by Kiev came after the discovery that Iran had sent ballistic missiles to Moscow.
Even Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov repeated the threat that permission to strike Russian territory would increase the West's involvement in the conflict in Ukraine and would bring a reaction from Moscow.
" There is no need to exaggerate. But, of course, this significantly increases the degree of collective involvement of the West in this war over Ukraine. Of course, this will bring a corresponding reaction from Russia ," Peskov warned, commenting on speculation that the West may take a positive decision on the issue of allowing the Ukrainian army to use its weapons for attacks deep in Russia, "TASS" reports.
While despite the claims, there is still no official place where it is said that the US has given Ukraine the right to use its long-range weapons inside Russian territory.
On Wednesday, the ABC television network quoted a Ukrainian presidential adviser as saying that US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky at a meeting in Kiev did not make decisions about using US weapons for attacks deep inside Russia.
He said that during the lengthy meeting, Zelensky presented Blinken with a detailed plan for how Kiev could use Western weapons to attack Russian territory and offered a list of possible targets. However, the Ukrainian official added that no decision had been made on this point.
Earlier, Blinken said at a joint press conference in Kiev with the British and Ukrainian foreign ministers, David Lammy and Andrey Sibiga, that the United States took into account the factor of a possible escalation of the situation in Ukraine due to discussions with the authorities of Kiev for striking Western weapons deep into Russian territory.
The situation seems very tense, however, it remains to be seen what decision Britain and the US will take regarding long-range weapons. One thing is for sure, with the war not going according to his plans, the drone strikes inside Russia, and Ukraine's occupation of the Krusk region, Putin seems unlikely to tolerate any more as his power may be compromised.
