Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel has condemned the unprecedented multi-pronged attack launched by the militant group Hamas against Israel on Saturday.
"I condemn the terrorist attacks of Hamas against the State of Israel in the most categorical way. They are inhumane and barbaric," Merkel said in a statement today.
"My thoughts and solidarity are with the Israeli people and the government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu," concluded Merkel, the center-right politician who led Germany from 2005 to 2021.
Current Chancellor Olaf Scholz pledged Germany's support for Israel in a phone conversation with Netanyahu yesterday.
His government also announced that Berlin's financial aid to the Palestinians would be reviewed.
Israel has declared a state of war, while a tank convoy has headed towards Gaza. Foreign media reports that there are clashes with Hamas militants on the border, while the Israeli military says they have hit 500 Hamas targets.
So far, over 700 Israeli victims have been reported, as well as 2,500 wounded, many of them in serious condition. Meanwhile, on the Palestinian front there are 493 victims and 2751 wounded.
