Gaza war, Israeli army accidentally kills five of its troops

The Israeli military said on Thursday that five of its soldiers were accidentally killed by Israeli tank fire in the Gaza Strip. The army said three other soldiers were wounded. The incident brings the number of Israeli troops killed to 273 since the war began in October.

The US military announced on Thursday that the construction of a temporary pier off the coast of Gaza has been completed. This will create a new route to bring humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.

US Central Command said aid trucks "are expected to arrive ashore in the coming days" and that the United Nations would be responsible for receiving shipments and coordinating distribution.

Arriving aid first undergoes inspection and security checks in Cyprus. The cargoes are then taken to a floating dock built by the United States off the coast of Gaza and transferred to trucks. Several smaller ships take the trucks to the newly docked pier on the Gaza coastline.

The deal is part of an effort to increase what humanitarian organizations say is an insufficient supply of food, medicine and other supplies to Palestinian civilians. Some humanitarian organizations have said that the sea corridor is not the best solution, arguing that increasing aid flows through land crossings would be much more effective.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant attacked Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday for failing to come up with a plan to govern Gaza after Israel's war with Hamas ends. But the Israeli leader said it was futile to do so until the militants were defeated.

In an unusual rift between the two leaders, Mr. Gallant said in a televised statement that he opposes the imposition of Israeli military or civilian control over the Gaza Strip, a territory along the Mediterranean Sea where some 2.3 million Palestinians live.

" Since October, I have repeatedly raised this issue in the cabinet and I have not received any response ," said Minister Gallant.

" I call on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to make a decision and declare that Israel will not impose control over the Gaza Strip ," Mr. Gallant said, calling for an "immediate governing alternative to Hamas."

With the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel and Israel's subsequent counter-attack on Hamas militants in Gaza, Prime Minister Netanyahu has repeatedly refused to lay out a post-war plan for governing Gaza.

The United States, Israel's main arms supplier, has called for a reformed Palestinian Authority to govern Gaza and the West Bank while a final two-state solution is reached.

But Mr Netanyahu and his right-wing ruling coalition firmly oppose such a solution. The prime minister said all discussions about how the Gaza Strip should be governed after the seven-month war were "empty words" if Hamas remained in the territory.

"The first condition for preparing the ground for another entity is the destruction of Hamas ," Prime Minister Netanyahu said in a statement published on his channel on the messaging app 'Telegram'.

Minister Gallant said that the current military action in Gaza must be followed by political action.

" The post-Hamas tomorrow will only be achieved when Palestinian entities take control of Gaza, accompanied by international actors, creating a governing alternative to Hamas rule ," he said.

" This, above all, is an interest of the State of Israel ", said Minister Gallant.

Right-wing National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, a member of Mr Netanyahu's ruling coalition, attacked Minister Gallant for his views. Mr. Ben-Gvir described Minister Gallant as "the defense minister who failed on October 7 and continues to fail today. "Such a defense minister should be replaced to achieve the goals of the war," he said.

According to Israeli officials, the war was sparked by a Hamas terror attack in Israel in October that killed 1,200 people and led to the capture of about 250 hostages.

Israel's subsequent counteroffensive in Gaza has killed more than 35,200 Palestinians, according to the Hamas-controlled Gaza Health Ministry. Hamas estimates include civilians and fighters in the death toll, but say most of the dead are women and children. Israel says it has killed more than 14,000 militants and about 16,000 civilians./VOA
