War in Iran, Mitsotakis 'opens the bag' for citizens and businesses:

The Greek government has presented a package of economic measures worth around 300 million euros, aimed at coping with rising prices, especially fuel, as a result of tensions in the Middle East.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced that the intervention aims to directly ease the burden on citizens and businesses.

One of the main measures is related to reducing the price of oil. The state will subsidize 16 cents per liter in the distribution network, which translates into about 20 cents less for consumers.

In parallel, families will benefit from a digital fuel card, usable at fuel stations, public transport and taxis. From this scheme, an average family is expected to benefit from around 50 euros every two months, while on the islands this amount reaches up to 60 euros. The scheme aims to include around 3 out of 4 million vehicle owners.

Support also for economic sectors

The package also includes measures for various sectors of the economy. Farmers will benefit from a 15% subsidy for the purchase of chemical fertilizers, while ferry companies will be compensated, provided that they reflect reductions in ticket prices.

According to the government, the goal is to curb the chain effect of price increases, from production to the consumer.

Government funding and stance

To finance the package, the Greek government also envisages changes in the taxation of profits from online gambling, with the aim of securing an additional 100 million euros.

Prime Minister Mitsotakis described these measures as a "shield" for citizens and businesses in a period of global uncertainty.

"Since no one knows how long this war will last, we are obviously holding reserves in case the global economic situation deteriorates significantly. Our message, therefore, is one: the government remains and will remain by the side of every Greek man and woman, as it has done in every difficult moment so far. Meanwhile, our homeland will overcome again all the storms caused by events beyond its borders, having as its daily weapon unity and social cohesion. In uncertain times, the homeland needs a stable compass in its orientation," Mitsotakis said.
