US President Donald Trump began his cabinet meeting by discussing domestic issues and criticizing his Democratic opponents. He then moved on to Operation Epic Fury, the US name for the Iran war.
Trump is repeating his oft-heard claim in recent weeks that the US is winning convincingly against Iran. He also reiterates that Iran is “begging” him to make a deal. Trump sharply criticized reports that he was eager for a diplomatic solution to the war, insisting that it was Iranian leaders who had asked to resume negotiations, but added that it may now be too late to reach a deal.
" Over the last three weeks, we have hit Iran's military capabilities at a level that few people have ever seen before. They are begging to make a deal. I don't know if we're going to be able to do it. I don't know if we're willing to do it. They should have done it four weeks ago ," Trump said.
The US president adds that the Iranians are bad fighters but are excellent negotiators. He also claims that Iran had a plan to invade the Middle East and used the threat that Tehran would have a nuclear weapon as justification for the attacks.
Trump today encouraged Iran to permanently abandon its nuclear ambitions, warning that the US would continue its military campaign if it did not do so.
"But now they have the opportunity, that is, Iran, to abandon their nuclear ambitions forever and chart a new path forward. We'll see if they want to do it. If they don't, we are their worst nightmare. In the meantime, we're just going to continue to destroy them, unhindered, unstoppable," Trump said during a cabinet meeting at the White House.
The US president also downplayed the rise in gas prices and the impact on the stock market as a result of the war with Iran, suggesting it was not as bad as he had expected. He added that he had predicted that oil prices would rise a little more, but stressed that after the war they would return to where they were, perhaps even lower.
" Honestly, I thought oil prices were going to go up more and I thought the stock market was going to go down more. It hasn't been nearly as bad as I thought. I think they have confidence in maybe the American president and maybe the people who are sitting around this table ," Trump added.
