While the Trump administration claims to be working to reach a deal with Iran to end the war, it continues a massive mobilization of military assets expected to be deployed to the Middle East.
But what is the total number of American troops that are expected to be deployed or are already in the region?
82nd Army Airborne Division : More than 1,000 U.S. soldiers with the 82nd Army Airborne Division are preparing to deploy in the coming days, and more could come if needed. The contingent of paratroopers includes a battalion from the 1st Brigade Combat Team.
11th Marine Expeditionary Unit and Amphibious Ready Group Boxer : The 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit and Amphibious Ready Group Boxer have redeployed and accelerated their deployments. One of the officials said it was unclear whether the entire Amphibious Ready Group and Marine Expeditionary Unit (ARG-MEU) would deploy or whether only some elements would go to the Middle East. The ARG-MEUs come with approximately 4,500 Marines and Marines each and bring a range of capabilities beyond ground support, including significant aviation and logistics components. The units also have several units trained for special operations.
31st MEU and Tripoli Amphibious Ready Group : A second ARG-MEU, with thousands of Marines coming from the Okinawa-based 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, is also deploying to the region. CNN previously reported that the USS Tripoli was spotted approaching Singapore last week.
Already in the region: US Central Command said that approximately 50,000 US troops are already in the Middle East as part of the war with Iran, before additional forces are sent or prepared for deployment.
