NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte presented the annual report for 2025 in Brussels, where he faced numerous questions regarding Donald Trump's recent criticism of the alliance.
During the press conference, Rutte avoided a direct confrontation with the former US president, emphasizing instead NATO's active role in recent developments in the Middle East and coordination with the US.
He cited as concrete examples the interventions to neutralize Iranian ballistic missiles that, according to him, endangered Turkey, as well as the involvement of member states in international discussions on the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
Asked about Trump's stances, Rutte admitted that there is a "frustration" on his part towards European allies.
"When it comes to President Trump's comments, what I've seen is some frustration with him about Europeans having to find time to react to his demands," Rutte said.
Rutte emphasized that this delay on the part of Europe had concrete reasons.
"I explained that this happened for good reasons, as the European allies did not know about the US and Israeli plans to attack Iran and had no opportunity to prepare," he added.
Rutte has tried to maintain a delicate balance between the US and European countries, avoiding tensions and emphasizing cooperation within the alliance.
