The 82nd Airborne Division contingent is expected to deploy in the coming days, while Washington states that it is holding talks with Iran to end the conflict.
About 1,000 American soldiers from the U.S. Army's 82nd Airborne Division are expected to deploy to the Middle East in the coming days, according to two sources familiar with the matter. The move adds to the American military presence in the region, at a time when the Trump administration says it is holding talks with Iran to end the conflict.
According to sources, referred to by CNN, the contingent includes Major General Brandon Tegtmeier, commander of the 82nd Airborne Division, the division's staff, as well as a battalion of the 1st Brigade Combat Team, which currently serves as the division's Immediate Reaction Force.
The first elements of the division and battalion staff are expected to begin deployment within a week, one of the sources said. Other parts of the brigade are also expected to be sent later, although these plans could change depending on developments on the ground.
The unit will serve as a "standby" force in the Middle East and can be activated if the situation requires it. The 82nd Airborne Division made a similar move in 2020, following the killing of Iranian commander Qasem Soleimani.
The Rapid Reaction Force is a brigade that can move on limited notice and acts as a rapid intervention force, capable of deploying within hours when called upon. This role rotates among U.S. Army brigades.
One of the sources said that official orders for deployment had not yet been issued, but they were expected very soon.
President Donald Trump said Monday that the U.S. and Iran had reached 15-point agreements during talks to end the conflict and that Tehran was "very keen" to reach a deal. Iran had previously denied any talks with the U.S., but on Tuesday an Iranian source told CNN that there had been "contacts" between the two countries and that Iran was willing to consider "viable" proposals to end the war.
However, in parallel with these contacts, the US is sending thousands of other troops to the region, in addition to the forces of the 82nd Airborne Division.
According to CNN, two Marine Expeditionary Units and two amphibious readiness groups have recently deployed to the region, bringing significant military power and additional operational options. Last week, CNN reported that the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit and the Boxer Amphibious Ready Group had accelerated their planned deployment and were being redeployed from the Indo-Pacific to the Middle East, where the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit and the Tripoli Amphibious Ready Group are also being deployed.
These formations include about 4,500 Marines and sailors each, as well as a wide range of capabilities beyond ground support, including significant air and logistics components.
