A Maltese-flagged container ship reported seeing three explosions 15 miles southwest of Mocha, Yemen, in the Bab al-Mandab Strait, according to British maritime security company Ambrey.
Ambrey said he understood three rockets had been fired from the direction of Yemen's Taiz Governorate, according to Sky News.
A nearby vessel reported seeing a small boat within a mile of the incident soon after, the company added.
"It was assessed that this particular vessel was not associated with Israel, but other vessels in the operator's fleet had regularly called on Israel and this affiliation may have been sufficient for it to be targeted ," Ambrey said.
Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi group, which controls much of Yemen, including the capital Sanaa, has stepped up attacks on merchant ships in the Red Sea in protest against Israel's strikes on Gaza, while it is not yet known whether the strikes recently related to the assassination of a senior Hamas official.
Saleh Al Arouri died today in an explosion in a suburb of the Lebanese capital.
