US Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in Kiev this morning. He did not announce earlier that he will visit Kiev.
The top US diplomat will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and deliver a speech later to emphasize continued US support for Ukraine, including militarily, economically, in the energy space and in building democratic institutions.
A US official said Blinken will also highlight the strategic successes Ukraine has achieved during its ongoing struggle against Russian occupation.
"Amid Ukraine's obstacles on the battlefield, Blinken aims to send a "strong security signal to Ukrainians ," he said.
Blinken's trip also comes weeks after US President Joe Biden signed a $95 billion foreign aid package that includes nearly $61 billion for Ukraine after a successful six-month campaign by the White House.
Blinken will also discuss "other steps we are taking to provide guarantees and long-term commitment on the security front to Ukrainians, including our bilateral security agreement," the official added.
Aid is expected to be sent to Ukraine at an accelerated pace.
"First of all, this trip will send a strong signal to reassure the Ukrainians, who are certainly in a difficult moment, due to the fierce fighting on the eastern front, but also with the Russians expected to make several cross-border attacks in Kharkiv" , said the American official.
The last visit to Ukraine by a senior US official took place in March, when national security adviser Jake Sullivan visited the country facing the unprovoked invasion launched by Moscow in February 2022.
