The Department of Buildings said a metal beam on the 21st floor had sustained significant damage. Meanwhile, the FDNY reported that two support columns inside the building had begun to bend, and signs of subsidence were noted on some of the upper floors.
For safety reasons, all workers were immediately evacuated from the site, while authorities also ordered the evacuation of two adjacent buildings. Hotels, shops and apartments in the surrounding area were also evacuated as a precautionary measure.
Engineers from the Construction Department are on site to assess the condition of the facility and determine the measures that need to be taken to stabilize it.
Meanwhile, several streets in Midtown Manhattan have been closed to traffic, while authorities have urged citizens and drivers to avoid the area until inspections are completed and the danger is eliminated.
