The death toll from the Los Angeles wildfires rose to at least 24 late Sunday, as officials worry more bodies will be found during searches of neighborhoods that have been leveled by the flames.
Raging flames continued to ravage California's west coast, as the top US emergency official warned that winds could pose new threats in the coming days.
"The winds are potentially getting stronger and more dangerous," Deanne Criswell, the administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA, told CNN's "State of the Union." "You never know which way they're blowing."
Local officials fear that as the fires spread, they could endanger more populated areas and threaten some of the city's major landmarks, including the J. Paul Getty Museum, which houses famous works of art, and the University of California, a from the most popular public universities in the USA.
California Senator Adam Schiff told CNN that driving through the devastated communities "reminded me honestly of visiting war zones. There are entire neighborhoods that have been wiped out. We've never seen this before" and it's "heartbreaking."
California Governor Gavin Newsom told NBC that the wildfires could be the worst natural disaster in the history of the United States.
