The battle for the future of Greenland looks like a spy thriller!
Did US President Donald Trump fall for a Russian hoax in 2019 when he first called for the US to take Greenland? Or did the Russians want to prevent the US from entering the land of ice?
It is said that the Russians have forged a letter from the Foreign Minister of Greenland addressed to an American senator! The objective was to drive a wedge between the NATO countries, Denmark and the US.
This would increase the scope for China and Russia, who are fighting together for the passage of the Arctic Ocean to the north and the Arctic mineral resources. China wants control of the Arctic Ocean and Panama Canal routes. Russia has nuclear icebreakers and its own submarine fleet in the north.
And as soon as the son of Donald Trump left the island again, a story from 2019 appears again in the capital of Greenland Nuuk. At the time, US President Trump initially demanded that his country buy Greenland. And then there was a letter in which the government of Greenland gave the Trump camp hope for success!
Greenland is strategically important for international trade. One of the most important trade routes in the future is the crossing of the Arctic Sea.
But according to the government of Greenland and the head of the Danish counterintelligence agency, Anders Henriksen, the Russian secret service was behind it - Moscow, in cooperation with China, would work massively against Denmark.
In a 2019 report, the spy chief explicitly referred to a letter from then-Greenland Foreign Minister Ane Lone Bagger to US Senator Tom Cotton.
According to the letter, the foreign minister thanked the senator friend of Trump, who is known for his open friendship with Russia, for his efforts to lead Greenland to independence. The Foreign Minister even predicted a successful referendum on independence from Denmark in the near future.
She expressly thanked the senator for his financial assistance and called for ties with the US.

It was clear to the Danish intelligence service and also Greenlandic politicians: China and Russia forged the letter that was shared on social media and specifically chose Senator Cotton as the recipient. That's because he had just claimed in a New York Times article that "We should buy Greenland."
Greenland MP Aleqa Hammond told TV Greenland at the time that the country was a "hot topic" and was troubling Russia. There are growing fears in Moscow that Copenhagen and Washington may reach an agreement on the Greenland issue.
The Danish news service PET wrote in 2019: "It is highly likely that the letter was forged by Russian agents and distributed online to cause confusion and incite a possible conflict between Denmark, the US and Greenland."
In Denmark, people thought they would have peace and quiet afterwards. But now Trump reiterated his purchase idea and did not rule out military use.
In 2019, the government in Copenhagen scoffed at him and his offer to buy Greenland. Trump angrily canceled a state visit to Copenhagen.
This time Copenhagen reacted more carefully! Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen offered talks on cooperation in Greenland. And Denmark's Ministry of Defense increased its military presence in Greenland. More will be done to ensure safety on transport routes.
