The death toll from massive wildfires that almost destroyed a town on the Hawaiian island of Maui has risen to 110, with many more reported missing.
This was announced by the authorities of the American archipelago, admitting that they did not use the alarm sirens during the tragedy.
The head of the EMA agency in charge of crisis management in Hawaii, Herman Andaya, said the sirens "are mainly used for tsunamis" and residents "are trained to take shelter at high altitudes" when they fall. He further added that if the sirens had gone off, it could have led people to danger.
"If the sirens had sounded that night, we were afraid that people would have gone to the mountainside and if that was the case, then they would have been caught in the fire," Andaya said .
