Mike Waltz stated that the US is not at war with Venezuela or its people.
The United States has denied that the operation in Venezuela constitutes an act of war or invasion.
They have also described the arrest as a police action to enforce criminal charges against President Nicolas Maduro.
During the United Nations Security Council meeting on Venezuela, the permanent representative of the United States, Mike Waltz, stated that the US is not at war with Venezuela or its people.
“As Secretary Rubio has emphasized, there is no war against Venezuela or its people. We are not invading Venezuela, this is a police operation. Pursuant to legitimate charges that have been in place for decades, the United States has arrested a drug trafficker who will now be tried in the United States, under the rule of law, for crimes committed against our people over the past 15 years,” Waltz said in his remarks to the Security Council.
Waltz compared the operation to the 1989 US intervention against former Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega, recalling that he was arrested, indicted, convicted by a US court and served his sentence in the United States and then in Panama.
The statement comes amid strong international reactions to the arrest of the Venezuelan president and heated debate in the Security Council over the impact of this action on international peace and security.
