"Dangerous precedent!"/ Security Council meets urgently after
United Nations Security Council

The arrest of Nicolas Maduro has caused strong reactions in the region and beyond.

Regarding this event, the United Nations Security Council convened an emergency meeting today.

The meeting is being held under the agenda of "Threats to international peace and security" and was convened at the request of Colombia, supported by China and Russia.

On behalf of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, the official statement was delivered by Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs and Peacebuilding, Rosemary DiCarlo.

In the statement, Guterres calls the operation a dangerous precedent, warning of the consequences it could have on international order and global stability.

"I am deeply concerned about the potential for escalating instability in the country, the potential impact on the region, and the dangerous precedent that could be set for how relations between states develop," Guterres said in a statement.

According to the UN, recent developments risk escalating tensions in Latin America and undermining the principles of state sovereignty and international law.

The Security Council meeting is expected to continue with discussions among permanent and non-permanent members, while the international community is following with concern the political and diplomatic consequences of the arrest of the Venezuelan president.
