Senior officials are talking about a "graceful departure" by 2026, while Prince William appears to have already taken the reins at the Palace.
Intense behind-the-scenes activity and a flurry of rumours are being recorded in the corridors of Buckingham Palace, with senior court officials claiming that King Charles could abdicate the throne in favour of Prince William within the next year. Although this information should be treated with caution, leaks from within the Palace are increasing and are creating a picture of a possible succession in the near future.
According to a senior royal official who spoke to #ShuterScoop, the succession process is expected to be "modest and dignified," while King Charles' health condition is considered the most "irrefutable" explanation for an early departure.
"Charles will not be presented as someone who was forced to abdicate. He has waited for this role all his life. When he steps down, he will do so entirely on his own terms," another Palace source said.
At the same time, claims are growing that Prince William is already exercising the duties of a monarch at all levels, except for the official title. “In many ways he is already the unofficial king. The institution is preparing emotionally, even if the formal documents have not yet been signed,” said a senior Palace aide.
The developments come at a time when King Charles is facing intense criticism. According to reports in the Daily Mail, his decision to allow his marginalized brother, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, to live on a royal estate in Sandringham is seriously damaging his legacy.
Royal analyst Maureen Callahan says King Charles may now be a "weakened leader" and that he "must give up the crown to save it," referring to ongoing health problems that are expected to continue in the coming months.
