According to The Washington Post, two sanctioned Iranian ships departed from the Gaolan port in China with chemicals that could be used for Tehran's missile program.
Two Iranian ships left a chemical port in China for Iran over the past week, carrying a cargo that experts suspect contains key ingredients for rocket fuel. The discovery was reported by The Washington Post after analyzing ship tracking data, satellite imagery and U.S. Treasury Department documents.
The Shabdis and Barzin ships belong to the state-owned Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines, which is under sanctions by the United States, the United Kingdom and the European Union.
According to the report, both ships were docked at Gaolan Port in the coastal city of Zhuhai in southeastern China. Experts say the port is used to load industrial chemicals, including sodium perchlorate, a key ingredient in the production of solid rocket fuel.
The report notes that the Barzin ship has previously been identified as carrying this chemical, which is used in the development of ballistic missiles.
Security experts point out that allowing ships to leave a Chinese port for Iran during an open conflict in the region raises questions about relations between China and Iran.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stated that China's position on the conflict in the Middle East remains "objective and impartial." He called for a ceasefire and an end to military operations in the region.
However, experts cited in the report point out that Chinese authorities could have detained the ships through administrative procedures if they had wanted to prevent the transport of materials suspected of military use.
