Latest news from the Trump camp: America is not wasting time changing the Iranian regime, but only aims to select a “good leader” who will sign the unconditional surrender. We provincials would say: a Badoglio is needed. Meanwhile, Donald is busy changing the American regime. The ideal he seeks to approach is the theocratic monarchy. The president-king wants to free himself from the constitution : “I answer to my morals and my soul.” And so it is. Congress has been pacified, the Supreme Court has been bypassed, the “deep state” is being purged, while the government is in chaos between smart opportunists (Rubio), enthusiastic loyalists (Hegseth) and silent disloyalists (Vance).
Trump is subverting American liberal democracy. And since we are talking about America, a country built on a kind of self-religion, the Trumpian revolution declares itself on a heavenly mission. This is confirmed by the prayers for the “miracle-working” president, conducted in the Oval Office by the next preacher. We are seeing a kind of nationalization of Jesus Christ according to the apocalyptic canons of evangelical inspiration.
On March 6, thirty Democratic lawmakers wrote to the Defense Department inspector general to denounce the crusade catechism that some commanders are imposing on troops. According to them, “American and Israeli attacks hasten the return of Jesus Christ” because they are in line with “God’s plan .” This is consistent with the government’s interpretation that “publicly presents American policy in the Middle East in explicitly religious terms .” The war against Iran is said to be written in the Bible. The American Military Religious Freedom Foundation cites dozens of similar complaints from entire units: “This morning our commander opened the report on the state of war preparedness by recommending that we not be afraid of what is happening on the front lines. He ordered us to tell our troops that ‘it is all part of God’s divine plan,’ with direct reference to the Book of Revelation about Armageddon and the imminent return of Jesus Christ.”
The finale is this: “President Trump has been chosen by Jesus to light in Iran the sign of fire that will cause Armageddon and mark his return to Earth. ”
The proclamation “God is with us ” does not bring luck. However, it shows the degree of closeness between the American and Israeli elites. A war for God against the Devil/Amalek. However, only six months ago the same Trump had gathered the elite of officers to mobilize the Armed Forces against the “ enemy within” . Meanwhile, the media publishes excerpts from the report with which the Pentagon had advised against attacking Iran. The United States is experiencing an epochal change under the sign of the principle of contradiction: yes warns no and vice versa. The American non-strategy had its shining years when the extraordinary superiority of power allowed it to make everything wrong before finding the right move. Those times are over. You cannot rule the world by looking only at yourself in the mirror without looking out the window. But if you consider yourself an envoy of the Higher Power, you cannot act otherwise, because you would fall into earthly temptations.
Whatever the military outcome of the crusade against the “ Iranian theocracy ,” the fact remains that the White House is in complete eschatological harmony with the Jewish ultra-right. With one notable difference: many American evangelicals are avowed anti-Semites. Now we know what the goal of this war is: the end of the world. Trump is presented as a prophet of God, along with Netanyahu. While Bibi’s wars are eroding the traditional philo-Semitism of the United States and dividing the Jewish diaspora, the alignment between the ultra-religious on both sides is shaping an alliance that is presented as blessed by God. Is it unbreakable? There is reason to doubt it.
The biographies of the two leaders do not show a penchant for martyrdom (their own, not others'). It would not be surprising if they suddenly reversed course from a war that promises the end of the world to a more earthly pragmatism. A compromise with reality could push them towards a dirty truce, disguised as a complete and final victory, as happened after the campaign of last June.
