US orders diplomatic personnel to leave Saudi Arabia

The decision comes after the drone attack on the US embassy in Riyadh and rising tensions with Iran.

The United States has ordered diplomatic personnel in Saudi Arabia to leave the country, according to a report by The New York Times citing current and former American officials.

The State Department order marks the first time such a decision has been made during the current war with Iran. The decision comes more than a week after joint US and Israeli strikes against the Iranian regime began.

During the conflict, Iran has carried out attacks on targets in the Gulf region, including Saudi Arabian territory.

Saudi Arabia's Defense Ministry said the US embassy in Riyadh was attacked by two drones, which caused a small fire in the building. Following the attack, US authorities decided to close the embassy.

The report said that American citizens in several Saudi cities were asked to stay in safe places. Saudi authorities also said they had shot down another drone that was targeting the area where the US embassy is located.

According to the report, US diplomats in Saudi Arabia had requested their own approval of the order to leave the country. Meanwhile, non-essential employees and their families at other US embassies, including those in Israel, have been given the opportunity to leave if they wish.
