The six people missing after the collapse of a road bridge in Baltimore, USA, are presumed dead, while the search for them has been closed.
"Based on the length of the search and the temperature of the water, at this time we do not estimate that we will find people alive," Vice Admiral Shannon Gilreath explained during a press conference.
They belonged to a construction crew that was repairing potholes when the bridge collapsed. Many vehicles were crossing the bridge, which is more than 2.6 kilometers long, when it collapsed after the ship hit a leg of it.
The crew then notified Maryland transportation officials of a possible collision, according to an unclassified Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency report on the incident.
Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said he could confirm that the crew notified authorities of a power problem, adding that the ship had lost power before crashing into one of the legs supporting the bridge.
Boats and helicopters were involved in a massive search and rescue effort to find the six missing. Two others were pulled from the water, with one in serious condition.
