Former FBI agent Charles McGonigal

Former FBI agent Charles McGonigal has pleaded guilty to working for a Russian oligarch. McGonigal pleaded guilty today to money laundering and conspiracy to violate sanctions.

The former agent faced two indictments, one in New York and one in Washington, D.C., in January of this year following a secret grand jury investigation into the counterintelligence chief and, specifically, his relationship with a representative of Oleg Deripaska, an oligarch. Russian.

"Insider" writes that federal prosecutors accused McGonigal of money laundering and making false statements in mandatory disclosures of his employees to the FBI. He was also accused of receiving money from Deripaska's representative, which violated US economic sanctions against Russia.

In court, McGonigal admitted taking money to gather information about Deripaska's business competitor in order to sanction him.

"I never intended to hurt the US, the FBI, my family and my friends," he said in a low voice in court as he thanked the FBI and prosecutors.

In court Tuesday, Judge Rearden noted that McGonigal is also being prosecuted on a separate charge in Washington, D.C., in which he is accused of soliciting a $500,000 bribe to help set up a meeting between the U.S. and the UN. Rearden said McGonigal's sentences could run consecutively.

Outside the courtroom, McGonigal's attorney, Seth DuCharme, said: "He's had a black cloud hanging over him for a long time. Now, hopefully, the clouds are starting to part a little bit."

McConigal will be sentenced on December 14.
