Today marks 4 years since the war in Ukraine, and a minute of silence was held in Kiev in memory of the victims of the Russian occupation.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky attended a prayer service at Saint Sophia Cathedral in Kiev with his wife. He was joined by European leaders, including European Council President Antonio Costa, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Finnish President Alexander Stoupa and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.

Immediately afterwards, they lit candles in memory of the victims of the war. "Ukraine has withstood numerous attacks thanks to the strength of our fighters. Thank you to those who did not retreat, who became a shield for their country," Zelensky said in a post on X.

He added that “we are proud of all those who defend Ukraine. We honor the memory of all fallen Ukrainian defenders, those who made the supreme sacrifice for a free Ukraine. And we will surely preserve what they fought for. We will defend our independence. We will not betray our heroes. We will not betray Ukraine. Eternal honor and blessed memory to all fallen Ukrainian warriors.”

Russia launched an operation to invade Ukraine, which was initially thought to last from a few days to a few weeks. Four years later, the Russian army is still on the Ukrainian front.

"Today marks exactly four years since Putin launched his three-day offensive to capture Kiev," the Ukrainian president said in a message on Telegram.

"And that says a lot about our resistance, about how Ukraine has fought all this time," Zelensky said.

He explained that behind his words "stand millions of our people, extraordinary courage, incredibly hard work, perseverance, and the long path that Ukraine has traveled since February 24, 2022."

"Looking back at the beginning of the occupation and reflecting on today, we have the right to say: we defended our independence, we did not lose our statehood. Putin did not achieve his goals," Zelensky stressed.

"He did not break the Ukrainians, he did not win this war. We saved Ukraine and we will do everything to achieve peace and justice. Glory to Ukraine!", said the Ukrainian president.
