Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel said she supports regulating the artificial intelligence market, even at the cost of a conflict with the US.
"It requires clear frameworks, regulations. This will be the next big battle with the US, whether or not we can regulate digital media ," Merkel said at an event for Stern magazine in Berlin.
The Americans will exert strong pressure against the regulation, the former chancellor said. However, she added that if everything is left to the operators and if care is not taken about what the algorithms look like and who decides on them. Merkel also critically assessed the new American security doctrine.
" I think we Europeans should never cut ties with the US ourselves. But we also cannot accept the way they are seeing us now ," she said.
She went on to say that she is particularly concerned that organizations, like the European Union, see the US as a nuisance and are trying to win the support of individual members separately.
