Sentenced to 8 years in prison for fraud in Albania, former Peruvian minister

A day earlier, Brazilian police arrested Manuel Augusto Blacker Miller, former Peruvian Minister of Foreign Affairs in Alberto Fujimori's government during the 1990s, in the southern area of Rio de Janeiro.

The arrested person was on the Interpol Red Notice list.

Blacker Miller, now 80, has been on the run for seven years and was wanted on suspicion of involvement in a financial fraud in Albania. He has always denied the crime.

The arrest was carried out in the Flamengo neighborhood, by agents of the Federal Police's International Cooperation Unit.

According to Albanian authorities, he committed the crime of fraud, for which he must serve an eight-year prison sentence, during the period he lived in the country after leaving his position in the Peruvian government.

The former minister will be transferred to the state prison system. He will remain in custody until his final extradition to Albania.

Miller, according to local police investigations, allegedly promised an investment that he did not fulfill.

Miller was a minister during Alberto Fujimori's government in 1991. He had already been sentenced to four years in prison in Peru in November 2007. At the time, the country's courts also convicted nine other former ministers of the Fujimori government.

The charge is that they helped organize a coup in 1992. But the former minister moved to Albania, where he lived for five years and became the main shareholder of an Albanian company.
