German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has downplayed tensions with Donald Trump after the US said it would withdraw at least 5,000 troops from Germany following a clash between the two leaders. Merz told German broadcaster ARD in an interview that there is "no connection" between the troop reduction and their disagreement.

"It may be a bit exaggerated, but it's nothing new. I remain convinced that the Americans are the most important partner for us in the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO)," Merz said.

The chancellor also appeared to confirm that a planned deployment of US long-range Tomahawk missiles in Germany, announced by former US President Joe Biden, was being cancelled, at least for now. He cited depleted arsenals due to the wars in Iran and Ukraine as the reason.

" The Americans themselves don't have enough at the moment. Objectively, there is hardly any possibility for the US to give up weapons systems of this type ," he said.

Relations between Germany and the US were strained this week after Merz said Iran had "humiliated" the US in talks, to which an angry Trump responded in a series of social media posts, telling Merz to fix his "broken country".

Earlier today, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said today that Germany and the US "share the same goal" on Iran.
