German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul wrote on the 'X' platform that he spoke by phone today with his Iranian counterpart, Seyed Abbas Aragchi. He said that Berlin and Washington "share the same goal," adding that Germany "supports a negotiated solution."
" Iran must completely and verifiably give up its nuclear weapons and immediately open the Strait of Hormuz ," Wadephul said.
This statement comes after Germany became the latest victim of Donald Trump's frustration with European countries over their response to the Iran war.
On Monday, Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Iran had "humiliated" the US when it persuaded officials to travel to Pakistan and they were forced to leave without results.
Trump responded with a series of social media posts on Tuesday evening, accusing Merz of tolerating a nuclear-armed Iran and telling him to fix his "broken country."
Also on Friday, the Pentagon announced that the US will withdraw 5,000 troops from Germany, where about 35,000 soldiers are stationed, more than half of the total of 68,000 across Europe.
"We're going to cut a lot, and we're cutting a lot more than 5,000 ," Trump said Saturday.
