Hackers linked to the Russian government have gained access to the emails of several top Microsoft officials, the US giant said on Friday.
The attack began in late November and was discovered on January 12, the software company said in a statement.
The hackers have downloaded some documents that were in the emails, but the company has not indicated who was affected by this action, mentioning only "a small percentage of employees".
As of June 30, Microsoft had about 221,000 employees.
"Microsoft has identified the threat as Midnight Blizzard, a Russian state-sponsored actor, also known as Nobelium," the American company said.
Microsoft has said that the hackers first targeted information linked to their group, and then expanded the operation./ REL
