Russian President Vladimir Putin plunged into the icy waters to mark the Orthodox holiday of Epiphany in the early hours of January 19, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.
Peskov did not specify in which area the 71-year-old Russian president dived. In Moscow, the temperature is -14 degrees Celsius, but that didn't stop Putin from diving three times making his cross in the icy waters of the cross-shaped pool.
Epiphany is one of the most popular holidays in Russia, after Christmas and Easter, and according to Russian tradition, men and women are immersed in water three times to symbolize the Holy Trinity. Russia follows the Old Calendar, so this year it celebrated Epiphany on January 19.
