A key member of Israel's war cabinet has accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of not telling the truth about military goals in Gaza.

Netanyahu has publicly rejected the US proposal for a future Palestinian state and insisted that the offensive will continue "until complete victory".

But Gadi Eisenkot said those who advocated the "absolute defeat" of Hamas were not "telling the truth".

Son of retired general killed fighting in Gaza. He also said Netanyahu shared "sharp and clear responsibility" for the failure to defend his country on October 7 and called for new elections, saying he had "no confidence" in Israel's current leadership.

Hamas killed around 1,300 people and took 240 hostages in the surprise attack in southern Israel. The tensions between the cabinet, with the prime minister and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant reportedly not on good terms, come as the gap between Israel and its Western allies widens.

After Mr Netanyahu's comments on Palestinian statehood, White House national security adviser John Kirby said the United States and Israel "clearly see things differently".

A State Department spokesman said there was no way to solve Israel's security challenges without a Palestinian state. The White House said President Joe Biden discussed a two-state solution with Netanyahu during a phone call Friday, the first in nearly a month.

Biden later spoke to reporters in Washington, and when asked by one whether a two-state solution was impossible with Mr. Netanyahu in office, he replied, "No, it's not."

“There are a number of types of two-state solutions. There are a number of countries that are members of the UN that ... do not have their own armies,” Mr. Biden said.

But Mr Netanyahu has spent his career resisting a Palestinian state and just last month boasted that he was proud to have prevented it.

The US has repeatedly tried to influence Israel's military strategy during this conflict, calling for more precision strikes on Gaza as opposed to general airstrikes; delaying or abandoning land occupation; and engaging in meaningful talks on a two-state solution in which Israel would adjoin a future Palestinian state, with a role for the Palestinian Authority.

But the calls have often been rebuffed by Mr. Netanyahu during tense meetings with American officials, deepening frustration in some American circles about President Biden's unconditional support for Israel.

Amid the predominance of death in this conflict, Israel's allies hope that life can return to the dormant two-state plan as the only way to create lasting peace.

Inside Israel, an increasingly unpopular prime minister is turning to the far right that supports his government. A recent poll found that only 15% of Israelis want him to keep his job after the war.

And while most Israelis continue to support military action against Hamas, most now say they want to prioritize bringing home the roughly 130 remaining hostages over the potentially impossible goal of destroying Hamas.

His recent comments on a future Palestinian state are also a repudiation of Arab efforts to mediate the conflict.
